Chapter Eight

IT WAS TWO HOURS LATER before we were able to make our way out of the snowbound parking lot.

"It's a five-hour drive in clear weather," Tommy said grimly. "It'll take us longer today. I want to get there tonight."

"Why? What's the rush?"

"I want to scope out the terrain before we make contact."

"But Uriel said the, um, event would take place on Saturday. We have plenty of time."

"We need to spend Friday laying the groundwork for our cover story so we're firmly in place on Saturday."

Tommy sounded so sure of himself I subsided, reasoning that he probably had more experience with such things.

I also felt, well, a trifle unsure around him after what Joel said. I had the cellphone as proof I hadn't hallucinated my chat with the archangel.

However, for some reason, Joel hid our talk from Tommy. I wasn't comfortable keeping secrets like this.

"What's that?" Tommy asked when we drove away from the hotel.

"A phone for you. I'll get it set up so it's easy to use."

"Where'd you get it?"

"I found it in my purse. Joel must have put it in there."

"That's weird."

"No kidding," I muttered.

"I probably don't need one."

"Yes, you do." I entered my contact information, put his number into my contact list, then downloaded a couple of useful apps. "I'll show you how to use it when we stop tonight."

"I still say I won't need it."

"Yes, you will."

"Yeah, right," he said grumpily.

I wisely didn't argue. Tommy appeared to be determined to be in a bad mood, so I decided to let him enjoy it.

I reviewed what the archangel told me while Tommy drove. I immediately discounted any notion that Tommy might be developing affection for me. I simply wasn't the kind of woman who would appeal to a man of his background and experience.

Heavens, he had traveled the world in his career with the Army. He'd probably encountered all kinds of femme fatales.

I, on the other hand, had experience with two young men, one in my first life, which was the reason I left England so precipitously to travel to America.

The lad seduced me and later abandoned me. I was disgraced in the eyes of my family. I was an older woman (twenty-two at the time) who allowed herself to be lured into a life of sin with a rakish, ne'er-do-well.

I didn't regret my experience with Johnny or the subsequent leave-taking of my home. I knew that a fling was the surest way to break the ties with my repressive father and scolding mother.

I didn't anticipate dying on the voyage. Even that was a benefit to me in the long run. And to be honest, my life in England had been like a living death to me. The adventure of the sea voyage was a joy until it ended so unexpectedly.

During my second life as a Helper I befriended a young patriot and we had a short-lived romance. He was killed in battle. I was betrayed and died as a traitor.

My third life as an Advisor and a suffragist did not afford me many opportunities to interact with men whom I could respect or love.
